News: Projects Highlighted at XIX International AIDS Conference
August 15, 2012 | < 1 Minute ReadAs part of the XIX International AIDS Conference, three USAID-funded Chemonics health projects were chosen to present posters to conference participants.
Washington D.C., hosted the XIX International AIDS Conference, the leading global gathering for professionals working in the field of HIV/AIDS, including scientists, policy makers, program implementers, and people living with HIV/AIDS. An estimated 30,000 participants attended the conference to share information about the latest advances in HIV prevention, education, and care.
Among those selected to present their work at the conference are three Chemonics projects: the Uganda Civil Society Fund Monitoring and Evaluation Project, the Democratic Republic of the Congo Integrated HIV/AIDS Project, and the Peru Quality Health Project.
The Uganda Civil Society Fund MEA project showcased three initiatives at the conference’s poster sessions: the first covers the use by civil society organizations of gender-related information, including gender disparities, to improve their programs; the second covers an innovative communication initiative for promoting AIDS awareness among youth using SMS technology; and finally, an analysis of how the Civil Society Fund’s design as a pooled funding mechanism has helped coordinate efforts of the many civil society organizations working on HIV/AIDS in Uganda.
The DRC Integrated HIV/AIDS project, ProVIC, highlighted their nighttime mobile voluntary HIV counseling and testing (HCT) services targeted at men who have sex with men. This poster was presented as part of an oral poster discussion session entitled, “Beyond the Clinics: Novel Approaches to HIV Testing.”
The Peru Quality Healthcare project shared results from a study on local attitudes towards circumcision conducted to assess the cultural acceptability of male neonatal circumcision as a preventive measure for HIV/AIDS infection.
The XIX International AIDS Conference took place from Sunday, July 22 through Thursday, July 26, at the Washington Convention Center. In addition to the three projects featured in the poster sessions, Chemonics hosted an exhibition booth featuring the HIV-related work being done by many of its health projects around the world.
