Colombia Productive Nature Activity

Project Dates: April 2023 - April 2028
USAID’s Colombia Productive Nature Activity (PNA) promotes biodiversity conservation by engaging the private sector through a market systems strategy.

Colombia’s ecosystems face increasing challenges that threaten their ability to sustain biodiversity and provide critical environmental services for local communities. Unique and biologically significant ecosystems, such as tropical dry forests, peatlands, wetlands, and flooded savannas are at risk from deforestation, climate change, and an underdeveloped regulatory framework. These pressures highlight the need for large-scale, collaborative conservation efforts.

PNA partners with private sector actors and local communities to conserve biodiversity, restore ecosystems, and improve livelihoods through market-driven Nature-based Solutions (NbS). By integrating NbS into value chains across agriculture, cosmetics, and energy, the program promotes sustainable practices, enhances competitiveness, and builds climate resilience.

Using a landscape approach, PNA focuses on conserving biodiversity in three socio-ecological corridors in the Andean, Caribbean, and Orinoquia regions. These efforts protect critical environmental services, restore ecosystems, and create economic opportunities for communities.

Project Goals

  • Expand NbS Funding: Collaborate with public and financial sectors to unlock funding and catalyze investments.
  • Develop Sustainable Local Systems: Co-design tailored NbS interventions, fostering inclusion and resilience.
  • Scale Profitable NbS Initiatives: Support value chains to integrate NbS and improve business models.
  • Strengthen Partnerships: Enhance collaboration to safeguard ecosystems and promote livelihoods.
  • Improve Regulatory Frameworks: Advance policies to enable large-scale NbS implementation.
