Project Report | January 28, 2021
Coordinated disinformation campaigns – online and offline – seek to sow discord in democracies by subverting elections, undermining trust in public institutions, and shaping public perceptions about politically controversial issues. Among tactics, operators seek to plant and amplify false narratives designed to deepen existing social fractures and create distrust of institutions. This research serves to aid in identifying producers/disseminators of disinformation, understanding types of disinformation, and providing recommendations for how governments, donors, citizens, and civil society organizations can mitigate and/or counter the destabilizing effects of disinformation.
