Environmental and Development Technical Manager, Colombia-TDA Luis Alfonso Ortega
Luis Alfonso Ortega is a specialist in biodiversity conservation adaptation to climate change with community participation, with more than 22 years of experience working in local conservation, environmental management, and land productivity through information technologies and participatory methodologies. Before joining Chemonics, he served as Director of Fundación Ecohabitats based in Popayán, Colombia, where he worked on developing partnerships with NGOs, national alliances, civil society, indigenous groups, and youth to address threats to conservation, such as illegal gold mining, deforestation and the growth of coca plants. In his previous role as the Regional Director of National Parks for the Colombian government, Mr. Ortega led the creation of several national natural parks and other regional protected areas. He currently serves as the Technical Environmental and Development Manager for the USAID-funded Activity Tierra Dorada project, based in Colombia. Mr. Ortega holds a bachelor’s in Biological Education Sciences from the Universidad del Cauca in Popayán, Colombia.
