Project management and new business director | UKD | London | 2019

Chemonics seeks a project management and new business director for its U.K. Division. The project manager and new business director will lead tasks related to project management, new business, technical advisory support, and management and leadership of development initiatives in the East Africa, West Africa, Middle East and North Africa, and Asia regions and for multiregional or global activities. Primary functions of the role include leading business and strategy development, technical assignments, and project management as well as contributing to corporate strategies, technical practices, and staff development and supervision. The project management and new business director will focus on U.K.-based international development funding agencies, including the Department for International Development (DFID) and the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO). Responsibilities include:

  • Develop effective and collaborative working relationships with clients, including DFID and FCO, counterparts, and stakeholders
  • Promote outstanding client service with home-office staff and field teams
  • Plan and direct technical activities at the home office and in the field for project startup, briefing the field team on the contract proposal and award process with an emphasis on the technical approach strategy and resulting initial work plan
  • Collaborate with the portfolio management director to discuss options and recommendations for the project directions
  • With project team leads, develop and supervise implementation of strategies to optimize contract budgets and reduce cost overruns
  • Supervise contract financial performance and budget management, oversee project closeouts and final report preparation, and ensure prompt resolution of implementation issues
  • Conduct regular supervisory field-office visits to assess the status of project activities or to participate in technical or evaluation work; serve as acting team lead as necessary
  • Lead proposal development, analyze and recommend proposal-related courses of action, and conceptualize teaming, technical approaches, and cost strategies to maximize Chemonics’ competitive advantage
  • Provide vision and leadership to proposal teams, supervising the application of best practices
  • Support the company’s new business by analyzing funding trends and priorities, formulating strategies, periodically travelling to explore new business opportunities, representing Chemonics, and gathering information to write technical proposals
  • Interact with key client and counterpart staff to strategically influence new programming decisions; develop and negotiate strategic partnerships with local firms
  • Establish and nurtures collaborative relationships with potential partners, subcontractors, technical specialists, and donor agencies
  • Demonstrate technical competence in work products, review and comment on project technical work, and provide technical input to reports and other documents
  • Advance knowledge and quality standards in primary technical discipline
  • Formulates approaches to guide Chemonics’ work, new business efforts, and technical assignments; advise clients and the company on technical trends and programming priorities
  • Maintain and expand professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies and Chemonics’ practice networks
  • Speak and write knowledgeably on the economic, political, social, and cultural environment of assigned development assistance projects
  • Delegate, supervise, mentor, and evaluate assigned staff, communicating clear performance goals and standards, offering regular performance feedback, promptly resolving problems, and creating time and opportunity for staff to develop in key competency areas
  • Promote staff development through coaching, mentoring, and facilitating professional growth opportunities
  • Foster a workplace culture of promoting inclusivity, creating opportunity, serving others, building trust, innovating, and exceeding expectations while modelling these best practices
  • Define team roles and responsibilities clearly and concisely, learn and promote strategies for effective teamwork and leadership development, and cultivate collaborative working relationships across the company
  • Serve as acting managing director or senior vice president as necessary


  • Degree in a relevant field or equivalent relevant experience required; advanced degree preferred
  • Thorough understanding of U.K.-donor client requirements and preferred methods of business
  • Understanding of and fluency in financial and project management systems and procedures
  • Ability to conceptualize, outline, perform, and direct the research and writing of technical documents (e.g., reports, proposals, and professional articles)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, lead effective meetings, and effectually deliver presentations
  • Ability to solve complex technical, managerial, or operational problems and evaluate options based on relevant information, resources, well-rounded experience, and knowledge
  • Ability to operate in positions of advanced authority and oversee significant activities, budgets, budgets, and resources to produce results
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise assigned department staff, several project teams, and new business efforts
  • Willingness to travel and work abroad for extended periods, including in fragile and conflict environments; experience living or working in developing countries preferred
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated management, organizational, and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Foreign language proficiency in a region in which we operate preferred
