Going to Great Heights to Get Children Reading

Chemonics works with fearless partners, like school director Abdulsattor Maskaev, to do whatever it takes to get children reading.

The Bartang Valley is located high amongst Tajikistan’s Pamir Mountains, a remote region at such extreme elevation it is often referred to as the “Roof of the World.” The desolate, rugged terrain is a drawcard for many adventure seekers, but it can make seemingly simple tasks, like delivering school books to students, extremely challenging.

Through one of our USAID-funded projects in Tajikistan, we were able to increase the availability of reading materials in 80% of schools and improve reading outcomes for students in Grades 1-4 in more than 75% of schools across Tajikistan, in both Tajik and Russian classrooms.
